Re: “Library defends life, liberty and pursuit of naughty toga parties” (The Nose, 5-16).

The Nose’s comments emphasize the fact that our freedom to access information comes with an equally important awareness of the responsibility of choice.

In that same library where “Caligula” was located were several computers with access to search engines and reviews which would provide the information to make an educated guess as to whether or not an NR movie was worth the watch. Based on the statistics provided by The Nose of questionable material deemed improper by a moral voice, several customers have already located these offensive titles.

In our human experience as Americans, we may choose which input will either add to the ultimate image we have of who we are or take away from that image. The First Amendment guarantees that right. It also increases our responsibility to control what our children have access to and what we as adults want to absorb.

Based our current struggle with education in this country, the importance of encouraging children to read during the summer becomes even more critical. It’s unfortunate that The Nose started out by mentioning the Pierce County Library’s summer reading program before proceeding to moralize about material found on library shelves.

I definitely don`t approve of everything I find on these same shelves, but thank God they are there and we all have the choice to access or not to access.
